More than just Fireworks!!!

Fireworks in Wilmington!  Wilmington presents arguably the finest display of fireworks, celebrating our nation’s independence in all of Eastern Massachusetts (except Boston). There are some (especially those from out of Town) that think only of the annual fireworks display when they think of Wilmington’s celebration.  But “Fun on the Fourth” is much more than just fireworks.  This is an entire community event.

A volunteer committee comprised of Wilmington residents works year-round to organize and run “Fun on the Fourth” in Wilmington.  People and groups from all around Wilmington participate in the premiere social event of the season.

Sure, the Spectacular fireworks are a tremendous finale to the nearly week-long activities, but there is so much more that makes this event special.

Residents and groups of all ages and make ups make this event what it is.

Wilmington High School art students design the “Fun on the Fourth” T-shirts every year.  These shirts have been seen from coast to coast as the Committee sells truckloads each year.  Many Wilmington based non-profit organizations utilize the Fourth of July Celebration to help fund their programs. Senior citizens have sold decorative hats to raise money for the Senior Center.  Groups from five different Wilmington churches work to raise money for their congregations.  A group sells items to support their weekly mailing of “care packages” to service men and women. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts man their booths to raise money for their Troops.  Youth and high school sports organizations pay for equipment, uniforms and ice time with the proceeds raised at this event.

Even the dinners and breakfasts are run by civic organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Sons of Italy, Community Fund, Wilmington Junior Camps, Wilmington Minutemen and Local Heroes.

No private vendors (other than the carnival) are allowed at “Fun on the Fourth” in Wilmington so that “What is spent in Wilmington, stays in Wilmington”.

Community fun, friends and fireworks are all important parts of the Celebration.  Please don’t forget that supporting the local non-profit groups is another important part of “Fun on the Fourth”.
